Chance

I took a call from a worried mother. Her daughter was stuck somewhere on the M62, had phoned the police - according to the mother - and still no-one had arrived.

It was cold, dark and she was on her own on a motorway. Not good.

I searched the M62 logs. A long motorway. She wasn't forced to be in our area either although the mother say it was near Leeds and there was a 'shopping centre' nearby. Ah, Junction 27.

I found a report from an off-duty copper. He'd phoned in about a broken down vehicle with a woman nearby. This had been some time ago. No sign of the young woman's log. The dispatcher's were asking why no-one had been. It looked as though it had slipped.

The mother told me her daughter was very cold. So cold that she wanted to lie down in the snow. Danger.

It all went on the log, suitably stressed.

15 minutes later she was in a warm police car.

If the copper hadn't phoned in? If the mother hadn't followed up?

  1. A scarey thought, John. Thank goodness you take good notes on your calls!

  2. Thank you Martha. Not a question of taking notes. It's all about thinking on your feet. The call was done in about five minutes.
